Akatsuki-Maru (暁丸あかつき-まる) is a character in Buriki One.

He is voiced by Eiji Yano.

Story[]

Currently a sekiwake, Akatsuki-Maru is considered the best sumo wrestler of the 20th century, considered one of the most powerful sumo wrestlers currently active. Although powerful, he tends to be inconsistent in the ring, defeating top-ranked rikishis and earning kinboshi, only to lose to lower ranked rikishi. Although his master was very strict on training him to be polite, he is not a man of self control. Akatsuki-Maru is a famous drunkard, even having a story that he once emptied 10 bottles of sake in one sitting. He is a sumo surrounded by gossip, but the kind of character people can't help but love, earning him a large number of fans. He initially rejected his invitation to the Buriki One tournament, but changed his mind, entering the regional qualifiers and winning with ease. He enters the tournament to prove he is the strongest in not just sumo, but the world. [1]

He apparently acquired the scar on his forehead during a student Sumo wrestling match. [2]

Personality[]

His personality is that of a cocky yet serious man.

Fighting Style[]

As a sumo wrestler, Akatsuki-Maru uses a lot of grappling moves, but doesn't use (or at least, modifies) the moves that seek to take the enemy out of the ring.

Music[]

  • Dawn - Buriki One

Trivia[]

  • Akatsuki-Maru is likely based on real-life Sumo wrestler Akebono Tarō, who was a yokozuka at the time of the game's development. Both wrestlers were much taller than most sumo wrestlers. Also, "akebono" and "akatsuki" are both Japanese words for dawn or daybreak.
